P.H.A.S.E. 1's Autism Fitness Journey

P.H.A.S.E. 1 Athletics mission is to provide fitness and athlete development to all regardless of gender, disability, age or experience. Currently our work is being done is in Arizona and we look forward to sharing it with the rest of the world. Autism is a global crisis, with some estimates as high as 1 in 55 children being diagnosed on the spectrum. With a shortage of expertise available on increasing the fitness and nutritional health for children with autism, P.H.A.S.E. 1'shope is our efforts will provide greater support for families and institutions.

This is P.H.A.S.E. 1's third year adapting our fitness and nutrition programs for children on the autism spectrum. We started in 2014 by implementing a physical education curriculum at Pathways School, an elementary school for high functioning autistic and special needs children. We then secured a contract at Arizona Autism Charter Schools (AZACS) to coordinate their after school program. AZACS is Arizona's first fully autistic public charter school, with children across the full spectrum of autism. This involved developing sensory games, movement development sessions and healthy snack cooking lessons.

Our success at coordinating the after school program for AZACS led to the opportunity to coordinate their 8 week summer camp. Prior to the end of the summer we were given the challenge of developing a full Physical Education program for both AZACS Middle and Elementary School, while also continuing to coordinate their after school program.

With a combination of the Autism Fitness in MY Classroom curriculum and our P.H.A.S.E. 1 Training System, our own proprietary athlete development curriculum, we began to develop a P.E. classroom structure that would meet the needs of the children at AZACS. Our efforts to create the optimal P.E. structure for children across the spectrum of autism has included, direct training from a certified behaviour therapist, occupational therapists, and other leading professionals in the world of autism. Our team is also trained in crisis prevention and intervention training and yoga specifically for children with autism. The transition into fitness and nutrition for children with autism has been an exciting and extremely rewarding journey we look forward to sharing with many more people in the near future.
