Natasha Ming - Yoga for Youth Wellness

P.H.A.S.E 1 Youth Association will be hosting a Youth Wellness Forum for youth age 14-21 to provide them with support during the COVID 19 pandemic. These workshops will be aimed at helping youths to maneuver through these difficult times as they are losing out on interpersonal contact because of their prolonged isolation. The P.H.A.S.E.1. Alumni Committee headed by President Denham Brown will be providing a team of alumni mentors and community partners to present the free workshops on various topics related to; self-awareness, self-management, responsible decision making and relationship skills.

Natasha Ming - Certified Yoga Inatructor

Who:

Natasha Ming is a 200 hour certified yoga instructor with experience in teaching Power Yoga and Vinyassa Flow. She started practicing yoga in 2006 and instantly fell in love. Over the years Natasha transitioned from someone who practiced yoga solely for the physical challenge to someone who practices yoga for the mind and body benefits. Once she learned how to connect mind to body through breath work she was able to honour her physical self and deepen her practice.

Purpose:

Provide Yoga techniques to train students on how to manage their emotional well being especially during the Covid-19 lockdown.


Focus:

Mindfulness, building a strong sense of self, managing anxiety


Overview:

As everything in the world is put on pause because of the Covid-19 Pandemic the emotional and social development of our children have been put on pause as well. The competing stressors and responsibilities parents face may have resulted in reduced attention to the psychological and emotional needs of their children.


Yoga is an ancient practice that offers more than physical benefits. Yoga reduces stress and fights depression by promoting relaxation and shifting your nervous system from fight or flight to calm and rest. Yoga relieves anxiety by emphasizing the importance of being present to find a sense of peace. Your mat is a safe place to practice techniques to help you navigate through life in a constructive way; however, the real work is done when you are off the mat.


If we look at the process of Social Emotional Learning (SEL), it is easy to see how yoga complements components of SEL. Simple breathing techniques taught in yoga triggers the parasympathetic function of your nervous system guiding you into a calm state. Managing your breath is a tool that anyone of any age can use to help manage emotions, and once you are able to manage your emotions you are able to make better decisions.


Natasha currently provides yoga instruction for Bond-P.H.A.S.E. 1 Academy a prep basketball program in Toronto, Canada. She uses yoga to train the athletes how to manage their emotions and provide tools and techniques to coaches to teach students how to incorporate these practices into their daily lives. The yoga practice also focuses on building a strong sense of self, how to manage anxiety and how to practice mindfulness through breathing techniques and positive messaging.
